= The super-abundance of opera companies and concerts in The Netherlands was sharply criticized by Matthijs Vermeulen on occasion of the final concert listed above: "Wij zullen langzamerhand moeten gaan denken, dat men ons voor den mal houdt. Er bestaat eene Nederlandsche Opera, een Lyrisch Tooneel, er bestaat eene onderneming van Pauwels, welke alle drie opera's geven. Daarbij geeft het Concertgebouw nog opera's, Kee van Zanten geeft opera's, Koeberg geeft opera's, Von Gerlach graast het veld af met opera's, de Wagner-Vereeniging, de Fransche Opera - alles geeft opera's en nu is er nog eene Amsterdamsche Opera-Vereeniging bij gekomen, waarvan niemand wist wanneer ze was opgericht of dat ze bestond.
Met de dirigenten gaat het juist zoo. De heele wereld dirigeert en over een paar jaren zal de reputatie van Mengelberg geen goed inkomen per jaar meer waard zijn. Koopman vertelde me, dat er alléén voor de vacature Richard Heuckeroth stapels sollicitaties waren binnengekomen. Stapels... en ik heb hem onmiddellijk geloofd. Het is een epidemie, welker omvang men 't best kan schatten uit het feit, dat zelfs de tenor Louis van Tulder koren en orchesten dirigeert, dat ik onzen collega Theo van der Bijl hier ontmoet aan het hoofd van de Amsterdamsche Opera-Vereeniging.
Het is onze collega, de muziek-criticus van De Tijd, die aldus profiteert van de prachtige gevolgen der Zweedsche heil-gymnastiek en heil-massage, en van de vrijgeleiden, welke het universeele dilettantisme verstrekt aan de onbelangrijkste menschen, die men desnoods alle menschelijke en goddelijke eigenschappen wil toekennen behalve de eigenschappen van den kunstenaar.
