= According to a label on verso of the frame this painting is by Godefridus Schalcken himself (and signed in upper right corner), with a provenance leading back to the collection Goudstikker. We found three references probably to this particular painting, regarding its provenance: Lijst van kunstwerken, door beoefenaars en verzamelaars bijeengebracht, om verloot te worden ten behoeve van Het Vaderland (Amst. 1831), no.95: "Saul bij de tooveresse te Endor, door of in de manier van Rembrand"; Veiling Amsterdam 25-01-1905, lot 815: "Godfried Schalcken. De Heks van Endor, Saul knielende voor de geest van Samuel, de heks op de achtergrond. Paneel. Fraai." (RKD: fichescollectie Cornelis Hofstede de Groot, no. 1483922) and Mak van Waay 12/15-12-1950, lot 75: "Koning Saul bij de waarzegster te Endor (...). Geparqueteerd paneel. H.74, B.97. Getekend."
